San Carlos, CA is a small suburban city 24 miles south of San Francisco, in San Mateo County, California, between the cities of Belmont and Redwood City, it has a total area of about 5.5 square miles. Before the Spanish arrived in 1769, the Lamchins (a tribe of the Ohlone People) occupied the area. The Spanish granted Jose Dario Argüello 35,240 acres which he used for raising cattle and crops. After the Mexican-American War Argüello maintained control of the property, but began selling it off as new American settlers began moving into the area.
While San Carlos, CA’s neighboring cities were experiencing reasonable growth, several attempts at creating a town proved to be unsuccessful, until Frederick Drake took over the San Carlos Park Syndicate in 1917. Drake improved the utilities (the water supply, gas, and electricity were piped to individual lots), and paved San Carlos, CA’s streets. He is acknowledged as the “Father of San Carlos, CA”. By 1918, San Carlos, CA had grown large enough to build its first school, the site is now occupied by San Carlos, CA’ City Hall at 600 Elm St, San Carlos, Ca.
During World War II, San Carlos, CA became home to the US Army War Dog Reception and Training Center. The “Dogs for Defense” set up on H and H Ranch, which was located in the area of Club and Crestview Drives. When it closed in 1944 approximately 4,500 dogs had gone through the training facility. After the war, several electronics companies set up plants in San Carlos, CA which helped to quadruple the local population; eventually San Carlos, CA would boast having 89 industries.
